On the Road

I'm looking out the window
at the concrete spinning
beneath my feet
on the road once more
don't quite know what I'm looking for
haven't quite got a clue at knowing
what I've left behind
I've left you behind

everybody's got a favorite joke
that they'll tell around the bar
everybody's got a favorite memory
that they won't tell anyone at all
everybody's got that special someone
but not everybody can call them home

there's a waitress in a diner
staring out the window
biting her lip
the road on her mind
doesn't know what she's looking for
but knows that it ain't waiting at home
she'll leave it all behind
she'll leave him behind

At a roadstop in Montana
I'm pumping gas into
a rusty tank
promise me just one thing
that if I get behind that wheel again
you won't be left behind
you won't be there this next time
